For the Book Review Blog Chain I have chosen Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco one of the most brilliant books I’ve ever read and my absolutely favourite book ever. I’ve read this one several times and still find the wohle plot to be perfect. It basically is a conspiracy theory that explains the whole human history in a new light. It is a hard book to read, Eco filled it with bits about history, culture and other things that often make you want to go and check your dictionary just to make sure that you’re getting what he’s trying to tell you. But it’s not necessary. Even if certain things aren’t understood you can still understand the book as a whole. Don’t try to understand every detail it’s not necessary, just go with the flow and let the book lead you to its end.
It’s rich in history and deep in mystery. The main character is a man named Casaubon, a student that is writing his thesis about the Knights Templar. He meets Jacopo Belbo who is a book editor working for a small publisher. A friendship develops and Casaubon starts working for the same publisher and helps them put together a new series of books.
They encounter many authors that present books full of conspiracies and as a game they start putting random concepts from the work of different books together and in this way stumble over what they call the Plan. It’s a conspiracy theory involving the Rosicrucians, the Jewish Kabbalah, Masonic rituals, Napoleon, the Nazis and connected to it all are the Knights Templar. 600 years of European history explained in a whole new light… or a huge coincidence put together by three friends that were just having fun.
The characters have depth, the dialogue is perfect and there isn’t anything that I don’t enjoy in this book.
